Extract from an interview:
“In order that a cat should come out with you onto the stage, it has not only to know you but it has to trust you. It is scared by music, audience, applause, and thus it has to see you as the one who protects it. One can only apply a carrot method to a cat, and even a carrot is looked upon skeptically by cats. The main thing is to find mutual understanding. The cat is very much like a man. In principle, even Freud can be projected onto cat’s life, after all there are horoscopes for cats. It has been proved that cats born under one sign of zodiac differ from those born under the other. Sometimes, it happens that a cat is just not willing to do turn and here the audience should be made to understand that that’s how it should go and there is a double to practically every stunt. But there was one occasion when the trick got a surprise continuation. According to the script we invite spectators onstage, the cat Belka runs out and jumps on their backs. Well, once Belka ran out, but it wasn’t disposed like jumping on the backs and it made its way to the audience hall. It ran around there and then came back to the stage and completed the act. Everything’s unpredictable: one cannot say to a cat: go this way, don’t go that way.
