Giuseppe Sabbatini (Conductor)

After his initial career as a bass player, taking the place of a Principal in the Orchestra of Arena di Verona at age of 24, Giuseppe Sabbatini has devoted himself to the study of singing under the guidance of Mrs. Silvana Ferraro, winning numerous national and international competitions, including the Competition "A. Belli", at Teatro Lirico Sperimentale of Spoleto (1987), where he debuted in the role of Edgardo in Lucia di Lammermoor.

His career took him performing in the most important theaters and concert halls of the world- from La Scala di Milano to the Metropolitan in New York, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Carnegie Hall in New York, the Opera Bastille in Paris, Covent Garden in London, Bolshoi in Moscow, Liceu in Barcelona, among many others.

Numbers of times he interpreted the leading roles in Mozart's Idomeneo, Mitridate and Don Giovanni, Salieri's L'Europa riconosciuta (for the opening of the season 2004 in La Scala with M.o Riccardo Muti), Linda di Chamounix, La favorita, L'elisir d'amore, Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda, Donizetti's Roberto Devereux and Lucrezia Borgia, Bellini's I puritani, Rigoletto, La Traviata, Simon Boccanegra, Luisa Miller, Ballo in maschera and Falstaff by Verdi, Puccini's La Boheme, Evgenij Onegin by Chaikovsky, Auber's Fra Diavolo.

His great interest in French music led him into performing roles in Rossini's Guillaume Tell, La fille du régiment and Dom Sébastien by Donizetti, Verdi's Jerusalem, Werther, Manon and Thaïs by Massenet, La damnation de Faust e Benvenuto Cellini by Berlioz, Les Contes d’Hoffmann and Orphée aux enfers by Offenbach, Bizet's Les pêcheurs de perles, Gounod's Faust and Roméo et Juliette.


MUSICA SACRA AND CONCERT MUSIC
In the sacred music, oratorio and concert music: Bach's “Mass in B minor", “Mass in C minor” of Mozart, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony; Schubert's “Mass in A flat minor”, the “Messe solennelle” of Berlioz, Rossini's “Stabat Mater” and “Messa Solenne”, the “Requiem” of Donizetti, Berlioz, Verdi and Dvorak, Bruckner's “Mass in F minor N. 3”.
Bernstein's “West Side Story” Suites N.1 and 2, the “Prigioniero” of Dallapiccola.
He appeared more than 130 times in recitals with piano, orchestra and chorus, solo and with other colleagues.

THE COLLABORATIONS
He collaborated with conductors such as Bartoletti, Bonynge, Campanella, Chailly, Chung, Davis, De Burgos, Delman, Gatti, Gavazzeni, Levine, Mehta, Muti, Nagano, Ozawa, Pappano, Plasson and with the most prestigious orchestras in the world, such as London Symphony, New York Philharmonic, Tokyo Symphony, Dresden Staatskapelle, Israel Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, Boston Symphony, Berlin Philharmonic.
And stage directors as Robert Carsen, Liliana Cavani, Hugo de Ana, Roberto De Simone, Nuria Espert, Alberto Fassini, Nicolas Joel, Dennis Krief, Robert Lepage, Jonathan Miller, Pier’Alli, Pierluigi Pizzi, Luca Ronconi, Pierluigi Samaritani, Jerome Savary, Andrei Serban, Graham Vick, Francesca Zambello and many other.

THE RECORDINGS
Between his numerous recordings there are: La maga Circe (Bongiovanni), Le maschere (Ricordi/Fonit Cetra), Simon Boccanegra (Capriccio), La Bohème (Ricordi/Emi), Don Giovanni (Chandos), Rossini's Stabat Mater and la Petite Messe Solennelle, antology with arias from the belcanto repertoire, a collection of Mozart arias (Capriccio) and a “Tribute to Verdi” (TDK). Guillaume Tell (Orfeo), La Grande Messe des Morts (Oehms) and Berlioz's Damnation de Faust (LSO Live). For Decca also recorded Mitridate, Re di Ponto and Thaïs. For Dynamic, Luisa Miller and Lucia di Lammermoor .

THE PRIZES
Giuseppe Sabbatini has been honored with many awards and recognitions, such as «Björling» (1987), «Caruso» and «Lauri Volpi» (1990), the Premio Abbiati, Critic's Award for the best tenor of the season, in the role of Lensky (1991) and «Schipa d’Oro» (1996), the «Opera Award 1999» (italian critic's award for the best tenor of the year), the «Pertile» (2003), the «Critic's Award» in Giappone (2005), the «Pentagramma d’oro» (2008), the «Francesco Tamagno» (2010) and the «ISO d’oro» in Graz (2011).
In 2003 he became a Kammersänger of the Wiener Staatsoper.

THE CONDUCTOR
During the past few years, Giuseppe Sabbatini's career as a tenor has been joined by his career as a conductor.
The study of counterpoint and composition with Maestro Luciano Pelosi has let him into activity full of success- conducting concerts with l’Orchestra da Camera delle Marche, Kyoto Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, Roma Sinfonietta, Virtuosi Italiani, l’Orchestra del Festival Puccini di Torre del Lago, l’Orchestra regionale dell’Emilia Romagna “Toscanini” di Parma, the Philharmony of Poznan, Zagreb, Graz, de Gran Canaria in Las Palmas and Piemonte, the State Hermitage Orchestra, Kostantinovsky Orchestra, the Symphonic Orchestra of San Petersburg, Bolshoi Theater Orchestra, the Russian National Orchestra in Moscow, Orquestra do Theatro Sao Pedro in Sao Paulo, Brasile, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic, National Opera and Ballet, Sofia, Bulgaria and Taurida International Symphonic Orchestra in S.Petersburg.

He collaborated with some of the greatest names in the world of the opera music: Berganza, Brownlee, Casolla, Cedolins, De Candia, Devia, D’Intino, Dvorsky, Expert, Guleghina, Martinucci, Marton, Meli, Nucci, Obraztsova, Praticò, Ricciarelli, Scandiuzzi, Servile, Theodossiou e altri.

THE TEACHER
Maestro Sabbatini is also comitted to teaching- he is giving Masterclasses for singing in the most important italian and international Schools and Academies (Aslico Milano, Scuola dell’Opera del Teatro Comunale of Bologna, Accademia Chigiana in Siena, Accademia “Elena Obraztsova” in S.Petersburg), Conservatories (S.Cecilia in Roma, G.Verdi in Milano, A.Casella in L’Aquila, "Ottorino Respighi" in Latina) Universities (Suny Fredonia University of New York, Geidai in Tokyo, Aichi in Nagoya, Kunitachi in Tachinawa).
Since November 2011, he is a Director of Studies and Principal Teacher of Technique and Interpretation at the Opera Academy of the Suntory Hall in Tokyo.
Maestro Sabbatini was invited as a President and a member of the jury of the most important competitions in the world of singing.
