Synopsis
Act I
A shack in Scotland. On the eve of the wedding day, Sylphide, an ethereal maiden of great beauty, appears before James and falls in love with him.
The fascinated, youth gently attempts to touch her, hut Sylphide vanishes. James is occupied with thoughts of the mysterious being.
Effi, James bride, appears; guests arrive. Merriment, dances…The young are given the wedding scarf. However, the sorceress, Madge, foretells Effi of another suitor - Gourn. James drives away the sorceress and calms his bride.
Sylphide appears time and again, and James, without the strength to control himself, follows after her.
Act II
James and Sylphide are in a magical wood. Trying to restrain, to entrap Sylphide, enamoured James cloaks her in a magical scarf, obedient to the evil charms of Madge.
Sylphide’s wings fall from her, and her life leaves with them. Her girlfriends carry her off to the clouds. James is in despair…In the distance a wedding procession passes, escorting Effi and Gourn.
