The festival dedicated to the 100 anniversary from the date of a birth of great Russian composer Dmitry Dmitrievich Shostakovich comes to the end with a concert of the Symphony Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre. By the right it is possible to consider the Mariinsky Theatre as Shostakovich’s theatre for all the composer’s symphony works sounded there.
The festival has captured a huge part of the Master’s heritage. In concerts eight of fifteen the composer’s symphonies (including well-known “Leningrad” and “Womanish Ravine”), violin and piano concertos, music to theatrical performances and films have been performed.
Participants of the festival were such Shostakovich’s “pathbreakers” as: the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra (V.Fedoseev), the State Symphony Orchestra of Russia named after E.F.Svetlanov (M.Gorenstein and M.Rostropovich), the St. Petersburg Philharmonic (G.Dmitriev), and also the best Moscow’s symphony orchestras under direction of outstanding conductors Mstislav Rostropovich, Maxim Shostakovich, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Alexander Dmitriev, Michael Pletnev, Yury Bashmet, Vladimir Yurovsky, Mark Gorenstein, and others.
As the curtain fell of the anniversary celebratings Valery Gergiev represents Shostakovich’s Fourteenth Symphony. The symphony was interpreted by the composer as “the protest against death.”
