Peter Stein (Stage Director)

Biography

Born in Berlin, Germany. He studied at the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Frankfurt. Theatrical career began in 1964 at the Munich theater Kammerspiele as an assistant director. As a director, he made his debut in 1966, the staging of the play E. Bond, Salvation. Worked in theaters in Bremen and Zurich. On the stage of Bremen Drama Theatre he staged Intrigue and Love by Schiller and Torquato Tasso by Goethe. 

In 1970 Peter Stein founded and headed the theater Schaubuehne in West Berlin, where he worked for 20 years. Productions by Stein characterized by peculiar psychology of the characters meticulously designed, carefully recreated in the scenery and sound design atmosphere of the place of action, emphasized the realistic style of play. 

Since 1986, Stein has been working in many places outside Germany, including major opera houses of Europe. Peter Stein opera productions were at the Salzburg Festival, the Vienna State Opera, the Netherlands Opera, Milan's La Scala and Liceo in Barcelona, Zurich Opera House, Lyon Opera ecc.

Since the early 1990s, Peter Stein became a freelance artist. In 1994 was shown the Moscow premiere of Oresteia by Aeschylus staged by Peter Stein with the participation of Russian artists. In 1998, Stein staged Hamlet by Shakespeare with Yevgeny Mironov in the title role. In 2000, as part of the World Expo in Hanover, Peter Stein staged the full version of Faust by Goethe. The performance, which lasted more than 20 hours, then was shown in Vienna and Berlin. 

In 2014 he staged Aida at the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre.
