In his version of “Giselle” Mats Ek kept the
traditional music by Adolphe Adam, took the classical libretto by Teofile
Gautier as a base and deliberately intensified the feeling of tragedy, making
Giselle an insane country girl and Albrecht – a kind of city Don Juan who comes
to the country to have fun with local girls. Mats Ek’s Giselle does not die but
her destiny is none less tragical. She breaks down and finds herself in a mental
institution full of contemporary “wilis’ that changed veils and long tutus for
straightjackets. Giselle’s best friend Hilarion tries to get her back to the
reality but her mind has left this world for ever… However, the playboy
Albrecht also can’t get the betrayed girl out of his mind - she is so much
unlike the light-headed shallow girls of his environment. He finally decides to
see Giselle at the hospital and this becomes the first step in his new life: the
pure, sincere feeling of Giselle lets him realize the futility of the material
world and believe in the power of love. Shifting action to another
epoch is quite a usual method, but in case of “Giselle” it comes truly natural.
Mats Ek’s production is in perfect harmony with our time, and that is why its
power and expression are so touching. The project is realized
within the framework of the Year of Russia-France 2010 and is supported by the
Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.
